European Portrait Porcelain Painting Icon FRAMED Mother child SIGNED 19th century hallmarked mechanical
madonna2TH2madonnaTHmadonna3TH3madonna4TH4madonna5TH5

Porcelain paintings were first produced in Europe during the middle of the 19th century. This Madonna and son, also called Madonna of the poor, would probably have been a smaller version of a well-known paintings of the day. The best ones came from KPM, Berlin's royal factory and have the KPM insignia etched on the back. These treasures are a rare find in today‘s artistic world. Portraits on porcelain were of very high quality and should be appreciated for artistic achievement and beauty in their own right. This one is one of the most beautifully detailed ones I have seen. AND it is in its original fretted brass hinged case with cover that was actually made by a jeweler for it. Dating in the 1800’s, this masterpiece is SUPERB and the crisp details and strong colors in this piece is exquisite. Since it is a mother and child it would be one of the most touching gifts to a new mother to give to her child as an heirloom. Few people have the opportunity to own such a piece and this one will be one that is treasured for sure.

The golden frame is made as many icons are, with the protective fret work hinged shutters on it in the front. This one is also hinged on the back so the painting can be inserted into it. The child’s face on this is one of the most angelic and innocent of any I have seen so be sure to click on the photos to enlarge it. I know once you see it up close you will certainly be in awe of this most talented artist.

The whole frame is 7 ½” x 5 ½” ( when opened) and the portrait is 3 ½” x 2 ½”. The back of the portrait has a stamp with writing on it and an impressed E. . There are a few small chips on the edge of the back which do not effect the front when viewed . The frame which has the jewelers mark of MV with a hammer in-between is a high quality piece. It stands on its own and is very mechanical. I can’t say enough nice things about this because everywhere you look, you see a long gone talent in the metal work to the tremendous painting.

Antique French Porcelain Hand Painted Nouveau Risque Woman with jewelry and Flowers in her Hair

This is one of the most risque portraits I have seen. Notice the Flowers in her hair which was typical of a lot of Nouveau woman who had that Greek Revival influence. The necklace around her neck is done in raised paint to give it dimension as are her earrings . The Border is 24kt gold Paint and she measures 1 1/2" long. The back is a solid brass setting.

This lovely young woman sports blush on her cheeks and a matching flower closure on the cape she is wearing. She also has the raised painted necklace . This one measures 1 1/2" long. If you click on her you can see the necklace and raised decorative work on her dress. I am not sure if it is supposed to be that color but it seems to give it dimension.

Antique IVORY Portrait Redhead Framed 19th century

redhead2TH2redhead3TH3redhead1TH1redhead4TH4

This is an exquisite 19th century double framed ( from an art gallery) portrait on ivory that has a red head with an upswept style and lovely soft tulle that looks like a cloud around her shoulders. The portrait in in great condition and the spots you see are from the glass around it. Hand painted she sits inside a shadowbox frame that is 8 3/4” x 7” 1 3/4” thick. She is 4” tall and she has her original metal ribbon frame which is inset into a deep red velvet. Not often do you see the redheads so this makes her a bit more desirable. If you look in the photo I took of the closeup of the top of her hair you can see that evey soft tendril and every hair was painted. You actually think you are looking at real hair. NOW that is detailed and the work of a very talented artist. The back of this shows that it was done for a gallery called Francis Hendricks and CO.Art dealers Syracuse NY. The back has never been taken off of this so it is in its original condition as when mounted.

Vintage ART NOUVEAU Galalith CAMEO Black Bracelet

vulcanite cameo bracelet 1th1
vulcanite cameo bracelet th

In 1898, Wilhelm Krische, patented one of the first plastics. But he had no way of knowing that 30 years later, Coco Chanel would take the "milk stone" and would help it make a final breakthrough in the costume jewelry industry. It is indeed usually French, but also was produced in Germany. French Bakelite or Galalith was used in the 1920’s- 1930’s and as is so often the case in the world of inventions, discovered by accident. Krische was commissioned to develop white school boards that could be wiped off but that would not burn, as German teachers no longer wanted to write on blackboards using white chalk, but instead wanted to get their message across black on white. Although critical experiments with the milk protein casein were in vain with regard to the original commission, the horn-like plastic from the element of milk had been discovered, even if no one really knew what to use it for. Krische put the finishing touches to his discovery in cooperation with the chemist Adolf Spitteler. They even changed and improved its characteristics by treating casein with formaldehyde. Galalith, the material made of milk, reached its absolute golden age shortly before the Second World War. Shortly after this, the production of galalith for jewelry purposes was initially restricted and then even banned. Upon the outbreak of war, milk was needed primarily for daily nutritional requirements, while the residual production of galalith was primarily for electro-technical purposes. After the end of the war, the material was suppressed by modern plastics that could be cast and heat-molded. This is a very early Galalith cameo bracelet with just a hint of red on the edges. The photos show that if you look closely. The cameo woman is very Art nouveau with flowing hair and a dress that drapes over her shoulder with flowers. The soft porcelain like skin makes her quite the catch!. The bangle measures 8” long on the inside and is 1 ¼” at its widest. IT has the feel of bakelite with the slick feeling you get when you rub your fingers across it, but it does not test as bakelite. Other than a small chip on her backing frame she is in very good condition and really needs a home where she will be loved and adored.

1885 Handpainted portrait in silk locket case

foldingportraitthfoldingportrait3TH3foldingportrait1th1foldingportrait2TH2

This dated, portrait of a young woman, is so detailed that you might thin it it a real photo. But you can see if you look close, the brush lines on the delicate lace top she is wearing. She has tiny stud earrings in her ear and that is just enough for such a feminine dress. The hard case is silk and it measures 3 1/3” long. It has discoloration on it but no silk loss. This is hinged so it would sit on a vanity or dresser. Yet it was portable so it could be taken with them when they traveled. The date is on the left side of the case.

SIGNED 1822 IVORY PORTRAIT FRAMED woman Royalty

queenportrait6TH6queenportraitTHqueenportrait1TH1queenportrait2TH2queenportrait3TH3queenportrait4TH4queenportrait5TH5queenportrait7TH7

This woman seems possibly to be an aristocrat or of a a royal family. Notice the upswept coif of hair and the intricate braidwork. Then as you see her dress, you can tell that this woman was from a very well to do family. On the back it is written Painted by A R BURT Chester July 1822. ( I think that is the name, I added a photo in case you can make it out better) . Around her shoulders she wears a soft tulle collar with a red ruby clasp. She also wears a lace shawl around her shoulders, below that. The frame is a blackened crackle wood and the gilt bale that holds the photo in is really fancy. The glass is not flat, but slightly rounded out and hand cut.
